		Each plane has its own operation of magic. The material plane’s is a general system, while each of [[Planes\|the elemental planes’]] are hugely powerful but inflexible.

		== Mechanics ==

		All magic is based on the transfer of energy. This energy flows through “spirit lines” that are tied to you and channel the power how you wish. To attract an energy type, you can open them selectively and siphon from your surroundings. These openings are in selective places on your body. The most common locations are the insides of the wrist, the inside of the knee, the ball of the foot, and the eyeball. Each of these is somewhat flexible so the wrist ports can be in the heel of your hand, for instance. Some even prefer to have theirs moved by the same mechanism that makes one into a shaper. Very few people use their eyeball ports. Pretty much the only use is for mind shapers, where leaks tend not to be damaging to the caster. Some cultures, namely orcs of the east, incorporate the extra ports into their shaping. The flashiest example is that they incorporate the feet into a martial art combined with shaping.

		=== Shapers ===

		Shapers can take energy from their immediate surroundings to fuel their magic. This energy flows through your body, meaning that if you lose control it will likely kill you. About a quarter of all people are born shapers. Anyone else can become a shaper by means of a particular ritual performed by a weaver, which connects the target’s spirit lines into a coherent web. Most people have a much easier time with one energy type than any of the others, heat being most common. Technically any shaper can use any type of energy, but some are harder than others for any given person.

		=== Weavers ===

		Weavers are able to shift spirit lines outside of themselves. This enables them to move more energy more safely, and also make more complex spells as the spirit lines can be twisted and crossed to form circuits. Spirit lines generally decay quickly once separated from the body, but if they are embedded within a [[Dzevv%20Materials\|Dzevv material]], they become permanent. Thus weavers are the only ones who can enchant items. One cannot be turned into a weaver. You must be born one. There are rare cases of people who are born with the potential to become a weaver, but are not intrinsic shapers. Should they be turned into shapers at a later time, they appear to become weavers against everything anyone knows about weaving.

		Despite many years trying, no one has found a way to make a normal shaper into a weaver.

		=== True Mages ===

		True mages appear to channel the power of the Æther and transform it into whatever they need at the time. This gives them much more power and flexibility than any other variety of caster.

		There has not yet been a True Mage who was a mind weaver. There are legends associated with the coming of one, among the most outlandish of which is that they will elevate everyone into the Æther to become gods.

		== Loci ==

		[[Loci\|Loci]] are points where one energy flows freely.

		== Types ==

		Healing magic works by intensifying the life energies within the person, causing them to be used up faster. Each twelfth of their hit point total healed by magic shortens their lifespan by a day. In addition, magical healing often causes exhaustion.

		Every shaper who can afford it has a Dzevv silver ring to hold their energy type. This ring is traditionally worn on the first finger of the dominant hand. A standard one holds about 50 MJ. The equivalents of this in different forms are as follows:

		=== Knife disk ===

		This thin glass disk is imbued with kinetic energy. When it breaks, the pieces fly apart at great speed and can slice easily through unprotected flesh.

		=== Bloodstone Ring ===

		These rings are a popular jewelry piece among military officers. It allows the wearer to cast a simple life drain spell once between long rests. This spell drains between 1d8 and 4d10 hit points from a touched target, depending on the power of the enchanter.

		=== Vial of Healing ===

		This small silver tube can hold a small mouthful of liquid. It starts with 1d4 charges. When liquid in this vial is drunk, it expends a charge to heal the drinker 2d4+2 hit points. The vial can be refilled and used again until it is out of charges.

		=== Tjuhhein ===

		Somewhere in the world are amulets called tjuhhen that are each intimately tied to an “element” of the world. A person bonded to one of the tjuhhein gains near mastery over its associated “element” and the ability to freely hold that element within themselves. This bond is established when a willing subject applies the amulet to their skin. It almost immediately extends needles into the subject, anchoring it in place and accessing at least one major blood vessel. This elicits no symptoms of rejection, indicating that the artifact is imbued with some life energy to make everything heal smoothly. After this, the amulet cannot be removed until after the death of the subject.
